A crowd of more than 10,000 family members, friends and well-wishers filled the W.A.C. Hughes Memorial Stadium today as Morgan State University conferred degrees to more than 1,100 graduates at its 137th annual commencement exercises.

The University awarded baccalaureate degrees to over 800 undergraduate students and more than 300 master’s and doctoral degrees at Saturday's ceremony.

"This is the moment of validation in the investment made by our students and their families," said Morgan President David Wilson. "We are honored and excited to send these graduates out into the world to grow a future of innovation and prosperity."

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan addressed the graduates as this year’s commencement speaker, telling students about the importance of education in today’s global marketplace. Duncan is given credit for helping to secure increases in the Pell grant program to boost the number of young Americans attending college and receiving post-secondary degrees. He is an advocate for efforts to ensure that colleges and universities provide more transparency around graduation, job placement, and student loan default rates.

Honorary degrees were awarded to two distinguished champions of civil rights and education. The Honorable Fred David Gray, former attorney for Rosa Parks and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and prominent educator Dr. Charles Vert Willie of the Harvard School of Education both received the honorary doctor of humane letters degree.

Notable graduates of the MSU Class of 2013 include Fulbright Scholar Christian Kameni, a history major and Prince George's County native, who is off to Paris this summer to teach English in the French Ministry of Education. Also graduating was mother and daughter Beulah and Tiye Lewis of Baltimore, MD., both students in the School of Education and Urban Studies who received undergraduate degrees in Family and Consumer Sciences and Physical Education, respectively. A perfect 4.0 grade point average has earned Graduate Craig Cornish of Southern Maryland, and a member of the MSU Honda All-Star team, a full scholarship to Princeton University next year to study history.

Also noted today, In the School of Graduate Studies, was the awarding of Morgan State’s first doctorate in psychometrics to Mercy W. Nedge Mugo.

Christian Kameni, a graduating senior in the Department of History was notified last month of his acceptance in the Fulbright Scholar Program. Kameni will study and teach in Paris beginning this summer, and is excited about the potential for his experience to move him towards a career goal of diplomacy and international affairs. He is the 131st Morgan State student or faculty member to be accepted into the prestigious Fulbright program, and is the latest Morganite to grow the university's legacy as the leading historically black university in the production of Fulbright scholars.

"They send you a letter to let you know you are a finalist, and once you become a finalist, it’s in the hands of the country to which you applied, said Kameni, recalling the moment he found out about his acceptance. "I was initially surprised, so when I got the finalist letter, I got (MSU Fulbright Program Director Dr. Carleen) Leggett to look it over to tell me what it meant. In April, I got the final letter from the French Ministry of Edcuation. I was speechless. I called my mother, and she said “You’re going to France!”

Kameni, who describes himself as shy when he arrived at Morgan from Parkdale High School in Prince George's County four years ago, credits Morgan's family atmosphere as the key factor in his decision to attend the school. Professors and fellow students helped to ease his into college, and motivated him to pursue new opportunities in academic and social development. H is the current vice-president of the MSU Golden Key Honor Society, and is a member of Alpha Kappa Mu and Pi Delta Phi, the French National Honor Society.

"I was impressed with the campus, it felt like a family and I felt at home. I was a bit shy, and I wasn't involved when I first arrived, so I felt like it was a boring school. Eventually, I started meeting people who were the total oppostite of me. They helped me to break out of my shell, to network and I got involved little by little. I joined the SGA, started going to more social activities. I went from being all the way reserved, to a bit less than that," he says, jokingly.

Kameni became interested in the Fulbright program after a French professor recommended it to him in his junior year.

"I looked at the website, read a couple of blogs about the Fulbright. It was very complicated. You have to have a lot of recommendations, write the most perfect essay you can write, and you have to make sure you have a strong idea of what you’re going to be doing. Dr. Leggett knows what the program is looking for, so she helped me with my application process."

Asked what he is most looking forward to with the Fulbright experience, Kameni says his achievement has not yet truly hit him.

"It still hasn't hit me, and it probably won't until I'm in Paris, but I’m sure working in the French Ministry is going to be super exciting."

UPPER MARLBORO, MD -- Albert Lewis, language arts teacher at Walker Mill Middle School, has been named the 2013 Prince George’s County Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made Thursday at the school system’s annual Teacher of the Year Celebration at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt.

Lewis began his career with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) as a substitute teacher in 2006. He earned his teaching certification through the school system’s Resident Teacher Program, and has been teaching language arts at Walker Mill since 2007.

“All 39 nominees for Prince George’s County Teacher of the Year have inspired their school communities with their outstanding skills, dedicated service and support of students, parents and colleagues,” said Dr. Alvin L. Crawley, Interim Superintendent of Schools. “These educators set the bar for excellence, and play a key role in ensuring the future success of our students.”

“Mr. Lewis brings a wealth of intellect, experience, and expertise to the job,” said Nicole Clifton, Ed.D., principal of Walker Mill. “His dedication and passion for the craft and his community is evident in his instruction and other areas, as well.”

Three other finalists were also named for the award during the May 2 celebration: Jennifer Boyles-Kellner, Forest Heights Elementary School; Erica Rogers Bair, Valley View Elementary School; and Patrice Porter Lawrence, Frederick Douglass High School.

“I was honored to take part in recognizing all of our outstanding nominees for this year’s award,” said Board Chair Verjeana M. Jacobs, Esq. “They are all Teachers of the Year in the eyes of their students, and all have the traits that make up a great educator: mastery of their content area, a passion for teaching, and a deep caring for their students.”

Lewis takes on additional roles and responsibilities at his school, including serving as Team Leader, Administrative Support person and member of the Instructional Council. He coordinated the Breakfast Club tutoring program in 2011, was Assistant Basketball Coach from 2007-2010, has been the Debate Coach since 2008 and has served as a motivational speaker at school assemblies since 2007.

Outside of his school community, he has worked as a reading tutor, where he developed and implemented curriculum for a summer science and technology camp, provided extending learning opportunities for students, designed tutoring programs and conducted professional development for peers.

Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications with a concentration in journalism from Morgan State University in 2007. But after serving as a substitute teacher in Prince George’s County from 2006-2007, he shifted his focus to education and started working towards earning his teaching certification in English.

Lewis will join representatives from all 24 Maryland counties in competing for the title of2013-2014 Maryland Teacher of the Year, through a process coordinated by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). The winner will be announced during a gala event in the fall, and will go on to represent Maryland in the national competition.

Dr. Wilson, an alumnus of Harvard, will make remarks on the nation's imperative to increase the number of college graduates, and the necessity of historically black colleges within that mission.

"If the nation is to lead the world again in the percent of our population with college degrees, how should we think about the role of particular institutions in helping us get there," asks Dr. Wilson. "Are some institutions more prepared than others to grow their enrollments, without sacrificing educational quality, and educate pockets of the population where we are seeing massive growth? How do we insure that Blacks and Hispanics, in particular, will be educated in sufficient numbers in the critical STEM fields, especially if we buy the notion that these fields are at the root of innovation?"

"I will attempt to present a case for the essential nature of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and minority serving institutions in educating a larger portion of the population from these growth pockets. I believe that our failure to do so can result in a weaker and non-competitive America long-term."

The panel discussion will be held from 4.00pm to 5.30pm at the Askwith Forum at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, Assistant Professor of Spanish and Coordinator of the Peace Corps Program, will be supervise the Campus Recruiter and coordinate the Peace Corps Program at Morgan State. She is looking to grow Morgan's program to eventually lead the field of HBCU's in producing quality volunteers to promote world peace and friendship.

According to Peace Corps data, "the top three HBCU producers of Volunteers serving since Peace Corps inception are Howard University with 170, Morehouse College with 72 Volunteers, and Texas Southern University with 71 Volunteers. Since 1961, a total of 1,794 HBCU graduates have served as Peace Corps Volunteers. Their scope of work varies from education, business, and health to environment, agriculture, and urban development projects. Peace Corps Director Tschetter said, ‘Historically Black Colleges and Universities continue to provide the Peace Corps with a capable and diverse group of Volunteer candidates. They represent the best of America as they apply their education and skills as Volunteers around the globe."

Morgan's Peace Corps program will host an official information session on April 18 beginning at 11:00 a.m. in Banneker Hall Room 112.

Dr. Kadir Aslan, Professor of Chemistry at Morgan State University, has recently described and demonstrated the use of a new crystallization technology, called metal-assisted and microwave-assisted evaporative crystallization (MA-MAEC). The MA-MAEC technology was the subject of Morgan’s first ever patent full application in its over 140-year history. At the laboratory bench scale, the MA-MAEC technology affords for the selective growth of the desired polymorphs of amino acids and pharmaceutical compounds "on-demand" in a fraction of the time as compared to the conventional evaporative crystallization.

Based on the commercial promise of the MA-MAEC technology, Dr. Aslan was awarded a $100,000 Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII) Award in March 2013. Dr. Aslan and his research group will develop several new crystallization products for commercial use with the MA-MAEC technology. The crystallization products are: 1) three new circular polymer crystallization platforms for commercially available microwave ovens (i) low sample load (21 samples), (ii) medium sample load (95 samples) and (iii) high sample load (204 samples). 2) “iCrystal system”: a high-end integrated device that offers a superior control over the crystallization process.

Potential users of the new crystallization products include researchers in academic institutions and industry, who can immediately use the new crystallization platforms in a commercially available microwave oven for the semi-quantitative assessment of their products. The iCrystal device will exclusively work with the new crystallization platforms. Consumers will be able to crystallize up to 204 samples “on demand” with a high degree of control over the microwave heating and thus the crystallization process, which is not offered by conventional microwave ovens. Beyond the MII funding, Dr. Aslan will seek other small business or technology grants and investor funding to develop this device for commercial applications.

Created by the General Assembly and administered by the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO), the Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII) promotes the commercialization of research conducted in five qualifying Maryland universities. The initiative encourages universities to partner on commercialization proposals, strategies, and funding sources. The MII program facilitates technology transfer from university labs to start-up companies and boosts economic development in Maryland.

In 1975 the Himalayan kingdom of Sikkim joined what very large neighbor to its south? “India!” shouted a student from Morgan State University, winning the university its second championship at the 24th Annual Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC), an academic competition challenging the wit of the best and brightest students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) around the country.

After two days of fierce competition the four member team- Captain Craig Cornish, senior, history major; Kyle De Jan, senior history major; Micheal Osikomaiya, junior, English major and James Hayes-Barber, sophomore, electrical engineering major- emerged victorious after 10 games of questions covering world history, science, literature, religion, art, social sciences, African-American history and culture and pop culture.

Morgan’s victory game was played against Florida A&M University as the two teams battled it out for the national title in a best 2-out-of-2 finals. The final two teams emerged from eight competing divisions advanced to the “Sweet 16,” a single-elimination playoff.

Morgan captured the top prize of the competition winning $50,000 in university grants. Second place winner Florida A&M won $25,000 and the remaining “Final Four” teams Oakwood University and West Virginia State University received $15,000. The other top eight schools received $15,000 in grants. HCASC awarded all 48 of the participating schools with grant money.

During the event-filled weekend, for students, alumni and friends of the university, Morgan President Dr. David Wilson provided a play-by-play of the competition via social media as the team progressed forward.

“We won!!!” was the final post on Wilson’s Facebook page on April 8 along with a photo of the team with the winning trophy. Students responded with congratulatory comments showing their Bear pride.

“Their game face and ‘we got this’ stance during the competition was inspiring...and intimidating!.” wrote Alison Park-LoGrande on the photo.

“Congratulations MSU! I knew we could do it,” wrote Wilbert Walker.

The HCASC has brought together the top HBCUs for the fierce competition for nearly 25 years. It is the only annual academic competition between the nation’s HBCUs bringing together more than 100,000 students and awarding more than $7 million in grants.

“The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge provides a one-of-a-kind outlet for students to flex

their knowledge and intellect in an intense but friendly rivalry,” said Steve Morikawa, assistant vice president, Corporate Community Relations, American Honda Motor Co. “Beyond the competition, the Challenge gives HBCU students an opportunity to connect with like-minded students, build friendships and establish networks that last beyond HCASC.”

Brown will be the keynote speaker for the 2013 Honors Convocation. Each year, Morgan State University celebrates outstanding student academic achievement with the annual Honors Convocation, which is held in the Gilliam Concert Hall of the Murphy Fine Arts Center.

This year’s convocation is being held on April 4th at 11:00 a.m., featuring the chairman, CEO and founder of Brown Capital Management, as keynote speaker. Brown will address students and faculty about his brand of success, perseverance, and what it takes to beat the odds. The nationally known businessman, philanthropist and author recently released an autobiography, appropriately titled, “Beating the Odds.”

With over 4 decades of experience in the industry, Brown now heads one of the nation’s oldest and most successful African American owned investment management companies. Ernst and Young recognized him as an “Entrepreneur of the Year” in the financial services industry and Black Enterprise named him one of the “40 most powerful African Americans in business.”

In addition to serving on numerous boards and commissions at the federal, state and local levels, Brown is also well known for his philanthropy. He and his wife, Sylvia, launched the Turning the Corner Achievement Program in 2002, providing expanded educational opportunities for African American middle school students in Baltimore. They have both committed time and financial resources to many other educational ventures, including support for students at Morgan State University and those studying the fine arts.
