Raymond Chester named to Black College Football HOF 2018 induction class

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Black College Football Hall of Fame, which honors the greatest football players and coaches from historically black colleges and universities, announced its 2018 induction class on Wednesday.

The class is highlighted by former Morgan State University tight end Raymond Chester.

Chester is one of seven members who will be honored at the Ninth Annual Black College Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Presented by the Atlanta Falcons on February 10, 2018. The Induction Ceremony takes place at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Inductees will also be recognized on ESPN at the Celebration Bowl in Atlanta on December 16th. For more information please visit www.BlackCollegeFootballHOF.org.

The newest members were selected from a list of 25 finalists who had been determined earlier by the Black College Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee comprised of prominent journalists, commentators, and historians, as well as former NFL General Managers and executives, and from previous BCFHOF inductees.

Others in the Class of 2018 are Harold Carmichael (Southern University), Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson (Langston University), Greg Lloyd (Fort Valley State University), Leo "Lincoln Locomotive" Lewis (Lincoln University), Everson Walls (Grambling State University) as player inductees and Bill Hayes (Winston-Salem State University and North Carolina A&T) as a coach inductee.

"This class represents three Super Bowl rings, 18 Pro Bowl selections and several Black College Football championships," said BCFHOF Co-Founder and 2011 Inductee Doug Williams. "Take a look at what they've done off the field as well, and each has earned this incredible honor."

Raymond Chester is widely considered one of the greatest tight ends of his era. From his days with the historic, undefeated Morgan State team of 1968 to playing in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Colts, Chester has always been among the best of the best.

Chester was a four-time Pro Bowler. Super Bowl Champion. NFL Rookie of the Year. United States Football League Man of the Year. Bay Area Pro Athlete of the Year. Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Hall of Fame. Maryland Athlete Hall of Fame—and was inducted to the Morgan State Hall of Fame in 2004.

The Black College Football Hall of Fame was founded in 2009 by African-American pioneers, quarterbacks James Harris and Doug Williams to preserve the history and honor the greatest football players, coaches and contributors from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). There have been 64 Inductees since inception, including Mel Blount, James Harris, Willie Lanier, Art Shell and Doug Williams, who serve as Trustees.
