Exhibit Will Serve as a Main Anchor Point for Water-related Education and Entertainment Throughout the Weekend of Festivities
At this year’s 34th Annual Artscape celebration, which takes place from July 17-19 along Charles Street between Preston and Mount Royal avenues in Baltimore’s art district, there will be a new center piece exhibit to highlight the festival’s 2015 theme of “Water.” Students from Morgan State University’s School of Architecture and Planning (SAP) were selected by Artscape coordinators to develop its “AquaLounge” to serve as an educational and entertainment focal point and gathering place for festival attendees throughout the weekend. The lounge is completely designed and built by Morgan students in Morgan’s SAP program.
Unique in its construction, the AquaLounge features custom made furniture, internal lighting and flowing water, all housed in a 30’ x 30’ x 30’ inflatable portable structure whose shape is based on the H20 molecule. During the day at Artscape, Morgan students will be on-hand to discuss the structure and educate visitors on what local organizations are doing to protect our local and regional watershed. Additionally, the lounge will be used as a meeting and gathering point for a Clean Water Action/Baltimore Department of Public Works sponsored stream-clean up along the Jones Falls. It will also serve as a refueling station offering free water to visitors who bring their own containers. At night, the AquaLounge transforms into an amphitheater and entertainment venue complete with DJs and performing artists from the Morgan Community. The exhibit is located near the center of Charles Street.
Artscape is America’s largest free outdoor arts festival, attracting more than 400,000 attendees over three days. It features visual art exhibits, outdoor sculpture, artists, designers, craftspeople, demonstrations, live concerts and more. Artscape 2015 takes place from July 17-19 along Charles Street between Preston and Mount Royal Avenues in Baltimore’s art district.
