Morgan State University has once again been invited to participate in Baltimore City’s Artscape – America’s largest free arts festival. For Artscape 2016, Morgan’s School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P) installed a design-build anchor project tying into the festival’s 2016 theme of “Space: Explore What’s Out There.”
SA+P instructor Brian Stansbury and his student collaborators created the Space Place exhibit as part of the giant, 1.5-mile long model solar system available for exploration at Artscape. The students designed the didactic elements and built environmental conditions to replicate the planets. The “inflatable celestials” each range in size from 5 feet to 30 feet in diameter, creating a winding path on the street through the festival’s man made solar system. Special lighting illuminates the planets from within providing a spectacular visual at night, while a live DJ is on hand providing musical entertainment.
Plan your visit to the outer solar system this weekend. Artscape starts on Friday night, July 15, and ends on Sunday night, July 17. Morgan SA+P’s Space Place installation is located near the intersection of Charles and Preston streets.
