Deputy Transportation Secretary John Porcari Visits Morgan

Deputy U.S. Secretary of Transportation John Porcari was on the campus of Morgan State University today where he spoke to a group attending Morgan’s annual transportation institutes for high school students and secondary teachers. Deputy Secretary Porcari fielded questions about job opportunities for emerging engineers and specialists, and why the industry needs more young people for future growth.

“In the next few years, we will have a significant part of the transportation workforce become eligible for retirement, and that means we need your passion and vision for the industry in order for it continue moving in the right direction,” Porcari told the group.

The STI for students annually invites high school students from throughout the Baltimore Region for a multi-week training ground in transportation, SAT preparation and college readiness. Through field trips, hands-on projects and networking, students are exposed to concepts and career options in engineering and transportation.

The Teacher Institute provides middle and high school instructors with information on industry trends and teaching strategies to spur student interest in S.T.E.M. careers.

“The Deputy Secretary really drove home what the students are learning here,” said Dr. Andrew Farkas, Director of the MSU National Transportation Center. “He really showed his passion for transportation and the good it creates for the country, and I think our students benefited from his example of how to enter the field.”

Morgan State University’s National Transportation Center receives support from the U.S Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration for the Summer Transportation Institute to introduce  high school students to career opportunities in the transportation industry.
