Kevon-Mark Jackman, a DrPH student, received a $40,884 R36 Dissertation Research Grant awarded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). This one-year grant is to conduct a mixed-methods study exploring perceptions of electronic personal health records (PHRs) as a risk reduction discussion tool among emerging black adults.
Beginning in April, we will be recruiting Morgan State University students ages 18-25 years old to participate in this two-phased qualitative and quantitative study. Students will receive $25 for their participation in addition to being eligible for prizes such as electronic tablets, book vouchers, and much more.
This research is important to public health for many reasons: (1) Study results and interpretations can inform the careful design of a patient-centered PHR applications – potentially improving the delivery of HIV/STD preventative care; (2) Understanding theoretical constructs of behavior is an important aspect of strategic planning and allocating resources for health promotions; (3) Results of this study may influence academic institutions to consider the implementation of PHRs as a critical part of student health services; and (4) Study findings may spur HIV/STD testing centers and providers to consider the value of linking patients to PHR health services.
