BALTIMORE, MD. — Morgan State University Vice-President for Research and Economic Development, Dr. Victor R. McCrary, Jr., was selected to the 2014 class of Fellows of the American Chemical Society (ACS). Ninety-nine individuals were selected this year for this honor for their contributions to chemistry, the scientific profession and the ACS community. Dr. McCrary’s selection places Morgan State University as the third Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to have a Fellow of the American Chemical Society. Dr. McCrary, along with the other honorees will be recognized August 11th at the 248th national meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Francisco.
Dr. McCrary was cited for his contributions to the science/profession for early, seminal research in indium phosphide/indium gallium arsenide phosphide quantum well lasers grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) at AT&T Bell Laboratories; an early pioneer to conduct research in early electronic book (e-book) prototypes at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) leading to the first e-book industry standard standards and formation of the Open E-Book Forum, and finally his oversight of $60M over nine years in internal R&D funding at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU-APL) which led to developments in autonomy, quantum computing, chemical sensing, and hyperspectral imaging to name a few of the research technologies he funded as JHU-APL’s Business Executive for Science and Technology. At all three institutions, he championed advanced degrees and professional opportunities in STEM for underrepresented women and men. In addition, Dr. McCrary was cited for his contributions to the ACS community, including initiating a partnership with the ACS as a co-sponsor of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) Science Bowl Competition, which annually brings diverse, high school teams from across the U.S. Dr. McCrary was the NOBCChE National President from 2007-2013.
Dr. McCrary holds a Doctorate in Chemistry from Howard University, an Executive Masters of Science, he Graduate School of Engineering with the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania (EMTM Program), and a Bachelors degree from The Catholic University of America. He is a graduate of DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, MD. He is the recipient of the Gold Medal from the US Department of Commerce, the Percy L. Julian Award from NOBCChE, and Scientist of the Year from US Black Engineer/ Black Engineer of the Year Awards.
