Grant to Fund New Research in Pathogen Detection
Morgan State University today announced the receipt of a $520,497 research grant from the Department of Defense. The grant, awarded to MSU associate professor and principal investigator for the project Dr. Angela Winstead, will be used to develop more sensitive and selective probes for pathogen detection, and will allow training opportunities for undergraduate researchers in the MSU Department of Chemistry.
“I have been training undergraduates in research since I started at Morgan in 2002,” says Dr. Winstead. “In fact, undergraduate students, around 25 students total, conducted all of my preliminary studies in the grant. The DoD grant will allow me to continue this training, and I will have 4 undergraduates working on this project this summer.
Dr. Winstead cites the securing of additional funds to support a graduate student and a couple of postdoctoral fellows and the extension of collaborative learning opportunities to outside institutions and companies as future goals for her research.
