Morgan State University’s Lawrence Peskin, a professor in the Department of History and Geography, has received the prestigious Awards for Faculty by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The award, which comes with a $33,000 grant, is presented to select individual scholars at Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Tribal Colleges and Universities. Dr. Peskin will use the grant to support his research investigating early American consuls and their networks in the Mediterranean and Latin America from the late 1700’s to the mid-1800’s.
“This project will result in a book tracing the development of American influence and national identity outside of American borders. The grant will be particularly useful for conducting research into a large trove of documents that I have discovered in Spain,” said Dr. Peskin, who has written extensively on Americans in North Africa. He is a co-author of America and the World: Culture, Commerce, Conflict.
NEH Awards for Faculty are extremely competitive. Only about eight percent of submitted applications receive funding. This specific grant program supports individual faculty members or staff at Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Tribal Colleges and Universities pursuing research of value to humanities scholars, students, or general audiences. The National Endowment for the Humanities is an independent federal agency created in 1965. It is one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States.
