Maryland's oldest historically Black college and university, as well as the state's biggest HBCU are basking from the benefits of really big gifts. Both Morgan State and Bowie State universities have received the most considerable contributions in their respective histories.Morgan State received its biggest cash infusion. University President David Wilson said he plans to use those funds for a campus transformation. The school received a $40 million gift -- that doubles the school’s endowment to roughly $80 million. That multimillion-dollar donation will be used to invest in innovation, reinforce research and increase the caliber of the students and staff. Wilson is also singing the praises of billionaire donor MacKenzie Scott for doing her due diligence, which now puts Morgan State on a path that's even brighter.“And when she did the due diligence, she realized that Morgan State University is a phenomenal university that is worthy of every one of those dollars,” Wilson said.Scott, former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is donating more than $4 billion to nearly 400 organizations.Only about 1% of the $4 billion represents a rather robust donation. Scott says she ordered her team to study about 6,500 organizations. That list got cut down to more than 800 then down to 384 and Morgan State made the cut. Now, Wilson plans to put that money into the school's unrestricted endowment to pursue unlimited opportunities. Wilson is on a quest to transform Morgan State into a world-class research institution in Baltimore.“We may also look at, perhaps, a couple of endowed professorships that will enable us to recruit the absolute best faculty in the world to come to see Morgan as the anchor urban research institution in Baltimore City,” he said.Bowie State also received $25 million from Scott, the largest in the university's history.
