Morgan State University is celebrating Friday, December 19, 2014 as the day when hundreds of Morgan students realize their ambition of achieving their bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree. 370 students will be awarded degrees at the 10:00 a.m. ceremony in the University’s Carl Murphy Fine Arts Center, a 26 percent increase over the number of December 2013 graduates. It represents the second December graduation exercises in Morgan’s 147-year history.
Slated to address the graduates is Julián Castro, secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Community Development. Sworn in by President Obama on July 28, 2014, Secretary Castro leads a federal agency with 8,000 employees and a $46-billion budget. In 2010, he was selected as one of Time magazine’s list of rising stars in American politics and among the World Economic Forum’s list of Young Global Leaders.
“We are pleased to welcome Secretary Castro to Morgan’s campus,” says Morgan President David Wilson. “He is a global leader and we are a global institution, which will make his message to our young graduates all the more relevant.”
Also attending the December 2014 Commencement is Carolyn Colvin, acting secretary of the Social Security Administration (SSA). Secretary Colvin is an alumna of Morgan State. Her nomination by President Obama awaits confirmation by the U.S. Senate. At Friday’s commencement exercises, Secretary Colvin will receive an honorary doctorate.
