MSU Civil Engineering Students Win ‘University Cup’ in ACI Concrete Competition

Congratulations to Morgan’s winning participants in the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Maryland Chapter’s Concrete Competition. This past March, 10 MSU civil engineering students on two teams, Morgan Nation and The Morgan Bears, competed against other area university teams in a concrete-mixing design and testing contest. Morgan Nation took the competition’s top spot, earning ACI’s University Cup, while The Morgan Bears earned second place honors. The University of Maryland, College Park team came in third. The winners were recognized at the ACI “Excellence in Concrete” Awards Banquet, which was sponsored by ACI’s Maryland Chapter this past April and held at the Engineer’s Club in downtown Baltimore.

For the ACI competition, teams were set up in a lab, given specific calculations and then challenged to create a batch of concrete that measured as close as possible to 7,000-psi strength. The judges also tested the concrete submissions for seven-day strength and 28-day strength. Morgan Nation won first place by achieving a concrete strength of 6,980-psi, and The Morgan Bears came in second with a measurement of 6,150-psi strength.

ACI’s nationally recognized student competitions, offered in cooperation with the ACI Student Activities Committee, give students the opportunity to participate in interesting and educational concrete projects.

The first-place Morgan Nation team consisted of Monique Hart, Courtney Russell, Shane Mitchell, Dmitri Clemons and Emmanuel Chinaka. Temitope Adeniji, Chelsea Stroble, Khalid Stevenson, Gary Wallace and Phine Ulysse made up The Morgan Bears team.
