Chi Epsilon, the civil engineering honor society, has installed its 141st chapter on the campus of Morgan State University. With the installation, Morgan became the only HBCU to have a Chi Epsilon chapter in its school of engineering and one of only two universities in Maryland with a chapter, joining the University of Maryland, College Park. The installation was the result of several years of hard work by MSU civil engineering students under the guidance of Dr. Monique Head, associate professor of structural engineering, who will also serve as the chapter’s faculty advisor.
At an induction ceremony at Morgan, five undergraduate students and 12 alumni were inducted into the society’s ranks. Congratulations to undergraduates Kofi Afriyie, Tenee Blackett, Brianna Lawton, Benevolence Ukaegbu and Emanuel Yisreal, and alumni Temitope Adeniji, Sunita Benson-Agwu, Emmanuel Chinaka, Kyle Edmonds, Teri Gray, Alona Green, Jevan James, Roderick Jones, Willine Richardson, Derek Riley, Akeem Stephenson and Khalid Stevenson for becoming the newest members of Chi Epsilon.
The new chapter is looking to grow, with the support of MSU School of Engineering Dean Michael G. Spencer, MSU Civil Engineering Chair and professor Reginald Amory and the entire department’s tenured and tenure-track faculty members. The Department of Civil Engineering graduates 20 to 30 civil engineers annually at the bachelor’s degree level and offers the Master of Engineering and Doctor of Engineering degrees.
Chi Epsilon is widely recognized as the premier membership group among college honor societies for civil engineering. Students and professionals are selected to become members based on their high scholastic achievement, good character, practicality and sociability, traits considered necessary by Chi Epsilon to become a successful engineer. Student inductees into Chi Epsilon must be in the top third of their junior or senior class. Members of Chi Epsilon are considered top graduates and are highly sought after by civil engineering employers. The society has more than 114,000 members nationwide.
