Morgan President To Keynote Nigerian University Commencement

Morgan State University President David Wilson is set to deliver the commencement address to graduates of Adeleke University in the West African nation of Nigeria. Adeleke University is located in Ede, a town in Osun State in Southwest Nigeria near Lagos. The university was founded in 2011 and is celebrating its sixth anniversary this year. Dr. Wilson’s invitation to speak is part of that celebration.

Wilson says he will talk to the students at the July 16th commencement ceremonies about their preparation for global leadership and service and the importance of universities preparing their students for the future.

“The world today is so interconnected that it might be considered flat, as author Thomas Friedman notes,” says Wilson. “And I want these students to understand the vital role they will play on the global stage. They must prepare themselves now to take on the kind of leadership that their country and the world will demand from them.”

Dr. M’bare N’Gom, dean of the James H. Gilliam, Jr., College of Liberal Arts, and who launched the African Studies Program at Morgan, will accompany Dr. Wilson on his visit to Nigeria, and will lecture at the university while there. A former history professor at Morgan, Dr. Hakeem Ibikunle Tijani, is now a professor of history and director of Research, Grants and Linkages at Adeleke University.

Morgan State University, founded in 1867, is celebrating its 150th year of excellence in higher education this year. A Carnegie-classified doctoral research institution, Morgan offers more than 100 academic programs leading to degrees from the baccalaureate to the doctorate. As Maryland’s preeminent public urban research university, Morgan serves a multiethnic and multiracial student body and seeks to ensure that the doors of higher education are opened as wide as possible to as many as possible.
