One of the foremost providers of resources and development for public relations professionals – PRNEWS – has named David Marshall, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Strategic Communication (SCOM) in Morgan State University’s School of Global Journalism and Communication (SGJC), as the ‘2021 Outstanding HBCU Educator of The Year.’ The award salutes communicators who, “use their platforms for the betterment of their communities and the global community at large” and faculty who “inspire and have positive impacts on the lives of their students.”
“This is really an amazing honor,” said Marshall. I am grateful to PRNEWS and the panel of judges for this important recognition. The work we do in the HBCU space produces students of excellence who go on to lead the world. I am grateful for the opportunity to invest in our talented students at a world class institution like Morgan.”
In addition to heading the SCOM program, Marshall teaches writing, social media, and the capstone class. His students land competitive internships, scholarships, and jobs. He is very involved in the profession, currently serving as president of the Maryland Chapter of The Public Relations Society of America.
In 2019, PRSA Maryland named Marshall “Educator of The Year” at the annual Best in Maryland competition. He has been active with PRSA National and The PR Council on plans to create diverse pipelines of talent by encouraging agencies to increase their recruitment efforts at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Marshall is a graduate of Morgan earning his bachelor’s in Religious Studies in 1987.

PRNEWS held a virtual CSR & Diversity Awards ceremony to celebrate communications leaders in 46 categories. For many in the public relations and communications profession, it has become a leading source of information, education, recognition and data.
SGJC’s Department of Strategic Communication, affectionately known as #scomup, is one of three academic units of The ACEJMC accredited School of Global Journalism and Communication at Morgan State University. The department prepares students for careers in public relations, social media, entertainment communication, and digital related jobs.

Morgan State University’s School of Global Journalism and Communication (SGJC) created in July 2013, is led by founding Dean DeWayne Wickham, a former columnist for USA TODAY and a founding member and former president of the National Association of Black Journalists. The school is dedicated to giving voice to people who struggle to contribute to the public discourse that shapes the nation and the world through innovative teaching, cutting-edge research and exemplary service to Maryland, the nation and the world. The school seeks to instill students with the skills, knowledge, and training necessary to become effective communicators and to add to the diversity of thought in the media. The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) voted unanimously to grant SGJC full accreditation in May 2020.
