Morgan State University’s Estuarine Research Center celebrated the start of a new chapter in its history recently with an open house at the University’s satellite campus in St. Leonard, Maryland. Joined by several hundred people including representatives from federal, state and local Southern Maryland government, the Academy of Natural Sciences at Drexel University and the community neighboring the facility, Morgan President David Wilson closed out the open house event announcing the new name for the Estuarine Research Center. The new name will be the Patuxent Environmental & Aquatic Research Laboratory (PEARL).
“This new name is a reflection on this facility’s renewed commitment to its research mission that is going to result in an environmentally improved Chesapeake Bay, a healthier seafood population and Maryland watermen who will benefit from a stronger industry,” said Dr. Wilson.
The day was also marked by the signing of new agreements with the National Academy of Sciences of Drexel University and other partners of the Morgan PEARL for continued and possibly enhanced cooperative research projects in the future.
