Morgan Doctoral Student Named to Forbes ‘30 Under 30’

Morgan State University graduate student Tamara Wilkerson has been named to the 2017 Forbes “30 Under 30” list in education. Wilkerson, a resident of Charlottesville, Va., was selected for her work as executive director of the Virginia-based African American Teaching Fellows (AATF), a nonprofit that recruits African-American teachers and assists in placing them in public schools. As leader of the organization, her goal is to change public school instruction by increasing the national percentage of African-American teachers in the classroom.

Wilkerson is enrolled in Morgan’s Community College Leadership Doctoral Program. When she is not working to enhance diversity in educational instruction, she is collecting data for her dissertation, which focuses on the retention of Latino students in community colleges.

The Forbes 30 Under 30 list comprises 30 individuals in 20 categories ranging from law to healthcare, who are nominated and then chosen by a selection panel. Wilkerson began as one of 15,000 nominees nationwide, a group that was later reduced to 600 finalists before she was chosen by the selection panel. In addition to being named to this exclusive list, she will get to network with all of the 30 Under 30 members named with and before her, and to participate in Forbes’ annual summit for game changers and leaders.
