2013 December Graduation Announcement

The Morgan State University is pleased to announce two significant changes in its annual graduation schedule:

  1. Certification of Graduates:  The University will certify students for completion of graduation requirements at the end of each grading period:  mini-mester (January), spring semester (May), summer school (August) and fall semester (December).
  2. Commencement Exercises:  The University will hold two commencement exercises:  at the end of the fall semester on the third Friday in December and at the end of the spring semester on the third Saturday of May.

May Graduation Exercises:  Students completing graduation requirements during the mini-mester and the spring semester will be officially graduated in May and will be required to attend May Commencement Exercises.  Faculty members, academic administrators and other appropriate administrators will be required to attend the exercises, as well.

December Graduation Exercises:  Students completing graduation requirements during the summer sessions and the fall semester will be officially graduated in December and will be required to attend December Commencement Exercises.  Faculty members, academic administrators and other appropriate administrators will be required to attend the exercises, as well.

Students, faculty and administrators should consult the Academic Calendar for dates and deadlines associated with graduation:  administration of final examinations, submittal of dissertations and theses, defenses of dissertations, submittal of final grades, certification of graduates, etc.

In making this announcement of policy change, which was approved by the Board of Regents, President Wilson affirmed two advantages of these changes:  (1) They will facilitate graduates getting employment and being admitted to graduate and professional study because they will not have to wait until May for official awarding of the degree; and (2) the number of graduates being awarded the degree in December will decrease significantly the number for May graduation, thereby shortening the ceremonies.

The University looks forward to full cooperation as it implements these changes.

This year December graduation will be held on Friday, December 20, 2013, at 10:00 a.m.
in the Gilliam Concert Hall of Murphy Fine Arts Center.  The Commencement Committee will post
on the Commencement Page of Morgan’s website.
