Recently, Morgan’s Department of World Languages and International Studies sponsored the Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad, giving a group of students a unique opportunity for study internationally in the African countries of Senegal and The Gambia.
The five-week intensive study and research program, which was made possible in part through resources received from the U.S. Department of Education, allowed participants to study and learn about Islam as well as the interaction and intersection between Islam, Muslim culture, African traditions and republican institutions through rigorous lectures, seminars, roundtables, and guided visits of culturally and historically relevant sites.
The research focused on religion, culture, and society in Senegambia and relied on scholars, experts, government officials, civil society representatives, and citizens to provide different and varied perspectives on Islam in this sub-region of West Africa.
