For the past two years, students enrolled in the Observation and Methods for Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) course at Morgan State University have supported the International Federation of Home Economics World Home Economics Day (WHED). In keeping with WHED’s 2016 theme, “Home Economics Literacy; Skills for Families and Consumers,” students distributed close to 200 “FACS” bags to MSU students and staff. The students solicited local vendors to contribute items such as healthy snacks, water, personal hygiene items and other materials representing “life skills.” To receive a bag, participants completed a 10-question electronic survey evaluating their life skills and familiarity with family and consumer sciences. After this event, balloons tagged with information about FACS and contact information for the FACS department at Morgan were launched. The students shared their findings and experience during a presentation at the Maryland Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Spring Meeting in April.
