Universities.com has ranked Morgan State University among the “Best Colleges with Psychometrics and Quantitative Psychology Degrees in the U.S.” MSU’s master’s degree and doctoral programs in psychometrics, the only such programs at a historically black college or university in the nation, earned Morgan a ranking of seventh in the listing. Psychometrics is the science of measuring mental capacities and processes. Practitioners in the field, psychometricians, use statistics and methodological expertise to design, develop, analyze and interpret tests and assessments, and to evaluate programs and interventions. The field has grown greatly in recent years with the rise of “big data” and ever-increasing computer power.
Morgan has graduated seven Ph.D. students in psychometrics since the department was launched in 2007. In addition, the University’s Center for Predictive Analytics was established in 2016 to provide much-needed statistical consultation, survey development and evaluation research services to the University, the state and the nation; to offer professional development support to psychology faculty and to provide more research opportunities to Morgan’s psychometrics students and faculty.
“The Psychometrics Program at Morgan is a unique, innovative and high-demand graduate program. The development of the Center for Predictive Analytics and an online certificate program in Psychometrics ensures that Morgan is the institution in Maryland to train a new cadre of scholars and practitioners in this growing discipline,” said Jocelyn Turner-Musa, Ph.D., chair of Morgan’s Department of Psychology.
