Congratulations to Director of Morgan State University Bands, Melvin Miles on his recent receipt of the Skip Scarborough Foundation’s Alexi Lifetime Achievement Award for Music Education. Miles, who was recognized for his many years of service in the field of music and the impact he has had on others, was presented with the honor during the foundation’s inaugural annual “A Musical Tribute to Skip Scarborough” celebration held at Morgan’s Murphy Fine Arts Center.
Miles has been a part of the Morgan family since 1973. In addition to his role as an instructor and director for the marching band, he also serves as the conductor of the Morgan State University Symphonic Winds, Concert Band and the MSU Jazz Ensemble.
The Skip Scarborough Foundation provides scholarships and grants to assist in the educational advancement of students within the Maryland Public School System who display extraordinary talent and potential in the performance arts. The award, which borrows its moniker from songwriter Skip Scarborough’s middle name, is awarded to an individual whose contribution to our culture is legendary and is still impacting generations to come. Prior to his death in 2003, Scarborough was a prolific songwriter, music publisher and record producer.
